Why Kids Love Crystals, Neurodiversity and Downtime

I have a friend whose daughter is Autistic. She can sometimes get overstimulated by her senses when there's too much noise or too many people around. On the flip side, she also has days where she hasn't had enough sensory stimulation and she struggles getting to sleep.

Whenever she stays over at my place she loves going into my 'crystal room' and exploring all the different coloured crystals, and all the different shapes and how the 'magic' is different in each one. She loves touching them and she loves holding them up to the light. It creates such a calm space for her to just 'be', and she always sleeps well (which I take as a massive complement because she doesn't really sleepover at anyone else's place).

I honestly believe that every child needs this space, whether they're neurodiverse or not. Most families I know run at a pretty fast pace these days. Kids have school, sports and full social calendars and a lot of the downtime outside of that is filled on phones or ipads. Their little brains and nervous systems really need some kind of downtime. This is nothing new - we all know this. I think the exploration of crystals is such a nice way for kids to unwind and connect with the present moment. Whether it’s putting a crystal in their pocket to rub between their fingers when they feel nervous, or placing one under their pillow to help them feel safe - it’s another tool to lean on in our modern, busy world.

Kids are also just naturally drawn to crystals. Unlike adults - whose minds are already filled with beliefs and skepticism - children are like little sponges open to the wonders of the world. Presence and curiosity are a great combination for exploring the magic of crystals - which kids have in bucket loads. Here’s why kids love crystals:

  1. Colour and Sparkle: Crystals naturally come in vibrant colours and have a shine or sparkle that captivates a child’s sense of wonder. The bright, eye-catching appearance makes them feel like magical treasures or special objects, sparking their curiosity.

  2. Sensory (Tactile): Crystals are smooth, cool to the touch, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes, making them interesting to hold and explore. Kids love physical objects they can touch and interact with, and crystals offer a satisfying sensory experience.

  3. Imagination and Magic: Children have vivid imaginations, and the mysterious or mystical properties associated with crystals can feel like they’re holding something magical. Whether it’s a “healing stone” or a “protective crystal,” these stories resonate with children who love the idea of magical objects with special powers.

  4. Nature Connection: Crystals are a natural product of the Earth, and children are often instinctively drawn to elements of nature. Holding a crystal is like holding a piece of the Earth, and this can create a sense of connection to the natural world, which many children find calming and grounding.

  5. Inherent Energy Sensitivity: Children are more in tune with their energy fields and surroundings, which might explain why they’re naturally attracted to the energy of crystals. Whether they feel comforted, calm, or fascinated, crystals may appeal to their sensitivity to the world around them.

  6. Collectibility and Treasure-Like Appeal: Kids love to collect things, and crystals feel like rare and special treasures. The uniqueness of each stone makes them feel like valuable keepsakes, encouraging children to cherish and even display them proudly.

Crystals offer a mix of beauty, sensory experience, and imaginative play, making them highly appealing to children. Our Children's Trio Tumbles are a great introduction into the world of crystals.
